Day by day I’m feeling stronger

You may recall that about six months ago I did something new. I started running with a coach and his club. You may recall that I was a little bit nervous about running with a coach and his club. Continue reading

So I better hold on

Does anyone else remember the Canada Fitness Award badges? An annual testament to my lack of athleticism. The standards were tough, with the best of the best receiving the Award of Excellence*. It may have come with a letter from the Prime Minister. I wouldn’t know. Continue reading

When I get rubber in all four gears

I’m trying to work on my running form. Specifically, I’m trying to break my habit of shuffling. According to Coach I run “like a Porsche”, low to the ground.  Continue reading

look and see the distance in my eyes

I briefly mentioned listening to Shawn Brady play at the pub after my 5K race last weekend. I didn’t mention that he recently released the album Electric Blood featuring the song All for the Run, inspired in part by the book Once a Runner. Also inspired in part, as Canadian Running reports, by his own running (he’s also an accomplished runner)Continue reading

Love and maple syrup goes together like the sticky winds of winter

Pancake Shrove Tuesday! You know what that means? Post-run pancakes. Topped with chocolate chips and, this will make me sound like a Canadian cliché, lots of maple syrup.

Canada produces more than 80% of the world’s maple syrup. The vast majority comes from the province of Quebec, the world’s largest producer with about 75% of global production.

Took the pictures off the wall

My blank walls have been staring at me for far too long, so yesterday Husband and I headed to the local arts shop to frame a cool print we bought in celebration of the Charleston Marathon. While at the store we bought a second piece, one I’ve been eyeing up for a while and I made some inquiries into another series of prints I’m interested in buying. Noticing a bit of a pattern, the proprietor asked if we liked graphic text art. My answer was a definite yes. I quite like words.

He showed us some of his own creations then pointed me to a fantastic website called Tagxedo where I could create my own graphic text art based on the theme of my choosing. My chosen theme is running. The Tagxedo learning curve is about 3 minutes and in 15 minutes I created these running-themed “masterpieces” mostly using default settings.  Imagine what I could do with an hour*. Monday, wear the sweater to school

Last Thursday was National Sweater Day. [Sorry if you missed it. Reminder: do not count on this blog to alert you to events beforehand, but I'll never fail to alert you once the event is over and everyone has gone home.]

On Feb 9th, put on your favourite sweater and turn the heat down a few degrees to help WWF take action against climate change, and work toward a sustainable future.

I participated during the day, mostly because I am cold-blooded and need to wear a sweater everyday, but could not find a suitable sweater for evening running. I’m not convinced there is such a thing*. Continue reading

Low rider drives a little slower

In continuation of my recent post about my secret shame – how little I run for someone who really loves running – am I ready to run more? Short answer, yes, yes, I am. Long answer …

How low can you go

I often claim to be a low mileage runner. Running mates have often asked if this claim is true (and, half-jokingly, if I’m training in secret).

Secretly I

Racing with the wind

I secretly ran the Charleston Marathon last weekend. I said I wasn’t running a race until spring. This was not a last-minute decision. It was a 12 weeks before decision. I lied to everyone*. Continue reading

I’m taking a greyhound on the Hudson River line

Dear New York City Marathon,

I hate this phrase, but are you kidding me? Continue reading

It just don’t seem fair; he’s still a gorilla

New year’s admission: I like cheesy run slogans and mantras and quotes.

I recently stumbled across* hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard, which speaks to my talentless genes. A low mileage runner, in 2012 I’m resolving to embrace miles make champions as my inspirational quote. During a pep seminar before the Boston Marathon an elite runner shared her keep it together mantra and I’ve since stolen it for my own use. I think it works better for her. Yesterday, this gem crossed my desk. It’s my new training motto. Continue reading

Walk on eggshells on my old stomping ground

I can now boast that I’ve run the beer mile, twice.  I can also say with confidence that I will never, ever run this mile: Continue reading
