I’m thinking all the time

NOT the No Training Marathon Training Program

I have a name.  For my Two Runs a Week Five-Week Marathon Training Program.  The TRWFWMTP just doesn’t roll off the tongue the way a winning and best-selling program name ought to.  So I’ve rebranded this the No Training Marathon Training Program*

The premise is simple and intuitive.  Given that the marathon is 90% mental, as so many “experts” are quick to say, 90% of your training should be mental.

Mental training includes watching people run on TV and in the movies, reading books/magazines/newspaper articles/blogs about running, drinking running themed alcohol, retweeting inspirational running quotes on twitter, purchasing expensive running gear and gadgets, eating “healthy” cookies for runners, and writing a blog about running.  The 10% physical training consists of one long run per week and one easy recovery run.  One, two.  The one long run per week will equal 75% of your weekly mileage.  No cross-training required.  Indeed, no cross-training.  Don’t forget to rest.  Rest is when you get stronger, so do a lot of resting.

*Not recommended. Follow at your own risk.

  1. Your twitter rocks. Your training plan rocks. On this plan I can train even through injury!

  2. This is the exact program I’ve been following. Thank you for giving it a name (and therefore some credibility). Marathon success awaits!

Love it, especially as it reduces the risk of injuries related to over-training!

  4. How did I miss this one? This is perfect for a guy commtted to never running a marathon. But if I ever change my mind, I’ll be ready all the same. Thanks for directing us back to ancient yet essential knowledge. I hope this belated comment doesn’t mess up your 2010 stats.
