I’m constantly setting resolutions. Except I call them goals. And they aren’t reserved for January 1. Still, I’m not completely immune to the siren call of new year’s goal setting and so I’ll join in the masses pledging to lose weight, quit drinking/smoking/vicing, and save more money. Except most of my goals are more in keeping with the midlife crisis I’m furiously battling. And yes, I realize if this is midlife my life will be regrettably short. Still, I should have enough time left to complete at least half of my 2010 running to do list.
- Be a pace bunny. Officially, in a race. Jogging around the neighbourhood in Husband’s pace bunny ears does not count. Also, unlike Husband, my appendix will not burst 24 hours after my inaugural bunny hop.
- Run a 50-miler. Really, how much harder can it be than 50K? They are both a 50.
- Win an age-group trophy. At my age that probably also means winning an overall trophy. Totally unrelated, but does anyone know which half marathon in southern Ontario has the smallest field of runners?
- Hit the dirt. I may need to drive to my routes, but I’m determined to spend time running on real trails and not just urban dirt paths packed down by baby strollers that cost more than my bike and overweight dogs.
- Run more. Last year my goal was to run 2009K in 2009. This year I’m aiming to run 2194.4K in 2010. If you can figure out why I picked that number you win a prize.
- Race a weird distance. A distance I’ve never raced before. A distance most people have never raced before. A guaranteed PB.
- A sprint distance triathlon. I’ve run two “super sprint” triathlons. 5 years ago. I really want to aim for an Olympic distance but goals are supposed to be realistic. Realistically swimming 1500m in open water would take me all day, what with the rescue and resuscitation.
- The all day run. In his book 50-50-50 Dean Karnazes talks about The Runabout (p143; read my insightful book review here). The goal of the runabout is to stay on your feet for 6 to 8 hours – with walking or hiking breaks if need be. I suspect need will be.
And because I’m always looking for new and exciting goal ideas, what’s on YOUR list for 2010?

A 50-miler!? That is impressive and sounds a lot more than 50 km to me!!
But less than 100k, which still intimidates me. I just need to find an “easy” 50-miler.
52 marathons!
I hope my prize is food related. The Best Buddies 10k in March had about <200 people. Last year was their first one. i think you can do it.
Ha, at first I thought you were sharing your goals for 2010 and I was like whoa. But colour me impressed! You win my admiration and I’ll share my jellybeans with you on a long cold run this winter. They freeze, so you need to be careful not to bite before warming. I wouldn’t want you to chip a tooth on your prize.
p.s. I’m a turtle at short distances. My shot at a trophy is a small 1/2 marathon.
52 marathons for me? sorry, i almost fell off of my chair laughing when i saw that. i am aiming for two fulls this year, as well as bringing down my 10k time. you’re so modest — your turtle pace is a good pace for me. Looking forward to those jellybelly beans!
2194.4 = 2010 + 1.6(50) + 42.2 + 2(21.1) + 2(10)?
So close
.
I think Mac was very close but too complicated.
2194.4 is the 2010 km training mileage plus two marathons and two ultra 50k races.
Close but too complicated. I’m a simple gal.
The only running goal I have for 2010 is to complete my first Marathon. The real training starts in 3 weeks! Best wishes to everyone for their running 2010′s!
Ohh, good luck with the training. Which race?
1 goal..no more Facebook. The rest is gravy.
Out do last year’s mileage (3280k)
Personal Bests in my usual distances (5k, 10k, 21.1k, 30k, 42.2k 50k)
Also would like to do a 50 miler. Maybe we’ll meet there?
No broken toes.
I think that covers it
50-miler, I’m in. Haliburton is lookin’ good. I’m adding no broken toes to my list. Seeing as I seldom get the urge to breakdance I’m probably safe.
of course, add no breakdancing to my list. (intoxicate or sober)
